# Issuing loyalty points

> Reward purchases and customer activity with points from a funded AIR loyalty campaign.

Issue loyalty points when a customer completes a qualifying action, such as a purchase, or distribute rewards to a selected audience. Your business decides what earns points; the campaign connects those rewards to a funded budget and clear spending rules.

## How issuing points works

<Steps>
  <Step title="Set up a funded campaign">
    Define the audience, campaign budget, and where the rewards can be spent. Choose the earning rules and expiry for campaign rewards.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Reward eligible activity">
    Use confirmed purchases, milestones, or other qualifying events to allocate points. A campaign can also distribute rewards to a selected group of customers.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Show customers what they earned">
    Make the balance, eligible redemption options, and expiry visible so customers know how to use their rewards.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Manage the campaign budget">
    Track issued, redeemed, outstanding, and expired rewards. Where the campaign supports it, recover eligible backing from expired rewards and reuse it for future distributions.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Points and credentials work together

A loyalty credential can prove that a customer qualifies for an offer, such as a Gold-member bonus. The points campaign then determines the reward they receive. Issuing or revoking a credential does not itself add or remove spendable points.

See [Loyalty credentials](/products/loyalty/how-it-works) for status and eligibility, and [Loyalty points](/products/loyalty/loyalty-points) for the reward model.
