# Spending loyalty points

> Let customers redeem eligible loyalty points, with clear spending rules and settlement for the merchant or partner.

Customers spend loyalty points at a redemption surface approved for their program, such as AIR Shop or an agreed partner checkout. Campaign rules determine which rewards are eligible, what they can be used for, and when they expire.

## How spending points works

<Steps>
  <Step title="Find an eligible reward or checkout">
    Show customers where their points can be used. Eligibility depends on the points currency, campaign, participating merchant, and expiry rules.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose how to use the points">
    Show the points required and the reward or checkout discount they provide. Make any restrictions and remaining payment clear before confirmation.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Redeem and update the balance">
    After a successful redemption, apply the benefit and update the customer's available points. In the campaign pSP model, spending eligible rewards settles the underlying SP.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Settle with the merchant or partner">
    Record the redeemed value and settle according to the program's agreed arrangement. Merchant payout timing and terms are defined for the program.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Unused rewards and breakage

Campaign rewards can expire if customers do not use them before the deadline. Where recovery is supported, eligible backing can return to the campaign budget for future rewards. This is separate from spending: expired points do not represent a sale or merchant redemption.

See [Breakage and budget recycling](/products/loyalty/loyalty-points#breakage-and-budget-recycling) for an example. Expiry applies to the campaign rewards; it does not mean all underlying points currencies expire.

## Explore a redemption experience

Visit [AIR Shop](https://air3.shop) to explore an AIR-owned redemption surface. Points must be eligible for the program and spend surface; testnet demo points cannot be spent there.
